Three days in Curaçao: which tours should you book?

Pastel-coloured waterfront houses with Dutch gables reflected in still water at dusk

Three days is enough for one city morning, one west coast day and one boat day, if you do not try to fit in anything else. Book the Highlights Walking Tour for day one, the Hato Caves, turtle beach, Kenepa and flamingos tour for day two and the Klein Curaçao yacht trip for day three.

Day one: Willemstad on foot

Start with the cheapest tour, so you know the town before you leave it. The guide takes you through the UNESCO-listed streets, past murals and colourful landmarks, and gives tips for the rest of your stay.

The evening is optional. The sunset catamaran sails out of Spanish Water, with Table Mountain in view, and serves finger food and an open bar of soft drinks, rum, vodka, Blue Curaçao, wine and beer; it is not dinner, so eat before or after. A hotel pickup costs $15 round trip, except in the Jan Thiel area. If you would like to know more, Sunset Cruises in Curaçao compares it with the other two evening boats.

Day two: the west

The six-hour west coast tour starts early: the pick-up window is 8 to 9 am, depending on where you stay, and the exact time arrives by email up to 24 hours before. The itinerary covers the Hato Caves, a turtle swim at Playa Piskadó, an hour at Kenepa and a flamingo photo stop. Cave entry, snorkel gear, water and soft drinks are included. Take swimwear and a towel.

If you would rather set your own pace at the beaches, you can compare hire cars for Curaçao, but then you pay for the caves and snorkel gear separately. Our guide to the car question explains the trade-off.

Day three: Klein Curaçao

Make this the last full day, because it takes nine hours. The yacht crossing is stated as one hour, snorkelling gear, breakfast and barbecue lunch are included, and a private beach house is the base on the island; diving gear is rented extra. Reviewers on the Klein Curaçao boats mention a choppy outward crossing, so if you get seasick, ask your pharmacist before you book and read Is Klein Curaçao worth a whole day? first.

What to leave out

The three tours together come to €215.12 per person, or €281.00 with the sunset cruise. Do not add the buggy or the underwater walk to a three-day trip; both are good, but each takes a day away from the beach. Do not book the west coast day and a second beach tour: they overlap. If the sea is a worry, swap day three for a second city morning and keep the money.

Our recommendation

Book the west coast day first, because it is the cheapest of the big days, then the Klein Curaçao yacht trip if you have the stomach for it, and leave the sunset cruise for a free evening.
